In the present day, Shaun finds a birch tree with the talisman carved into its bark. The book is apparently filled with illustrations of the talisman, and his grandmother tells him to look for her mark in the forest.

Shaun opens the book and sees two-page illustration of a forest, with the talisman he made in the beginning of the film drawn above the forest. He remembers his bedridden grandmother giving him the book, and telling him that when she's gone, "she" will protect him, just as she always has. Shaun manages to get away from him and runs into the forest. He throws Shaun to the ground and starts to beat him up. A classmate of his, Kris, grabs him and starts to antagonize him. There is a flashback to when Shaun is walking home from school one day. As he constructs a talisman made of birch wood, a voice-over tells him that some believe that the forest cares for nothing but itself, but they are wrong - if someone listens carefully, they can hear the voice of the forest, and that its tortured heart can feel our pain, too. A bullied schoolboy takes drastic measures against his tormenter, summoning an ancient being in the woods using a spellbound book passed down through the generations of his family.Ī boy, Shaun, walks through the forest, carrying a book with him that is bound with birch wood.
